Bob was 1st Gunner in a light mortar squad. It was his job to carry the mortar gun, 

set it up, aim and fire the round. The mortar and mount weighed 42 pounds. Here is 

a picture of the mortar and a scan of an actual WWII 60MM mortar shell.

   

 

As a mortar man he carried a 45 pistol. During qualifications he scored EXPERT with the 45 pistol

 

During combat his mortar was loaned to "I" Company. Bob was reassigned a M1 rifle and would have carried a bandoleer.
